The Western Diet vs The Ketogenic Diet

western diet vs ketogenic diet
To be as fair as possible, we're going to list all the pros and cons of each, let's begin.
Introducing the diet we all loved and now hate, the infamous:
Western Diet also known as (SAD) <---- more on the irony of this later.
Let's have a look at the food proportions also known as:
''Macronutrients'' of the (Standard American Diet) weighing in at:
Carbs 65-45% | Fat 35-20% | Protein 35-15%
Key features:
  • Fast, Cheap, Expedient
  • Chronic Inflammation (continually being researched as one of the main contributors to cancer and disease)
  • Chronic Disease and Disorders
  • Glycemic Overload
  • Processed
  • Refined Carbs
  • Refined Grains
  • Restless kids... wait that's not a feature.
Now a quick look at the contender...

A well known dietary regime that was originally used to treat epilepsy in 500BC, yeah you read correctly (Before Christ) and introduced to mainstream medical practice by modern physicians as a treatment for epilepsy since the 1920s.

It has since evolved and taken the health & fitness world by storm, not to mention researchers looking into it as a promising insight into degenerative diseases, cancer prevention, and cure.

Introducing the Ketogenic Diet also known as (''Keto'' or ''LCHF'')

Macronutrients: Carbs 5-10% | Protein 20-25% | Fat 70-80%

Key features:
  • Improves Libido (yes, it should be first)
  • Increases Energy & Performance
  • Improves Memory, Clarity & Focus (becoming ''present'' will never be easier)
  • Reduces ''Brain Fog''
  • Reduces blood glucose / becoming less insulin resistant (for diabetes this is gold)
  • Fewer reactive oxygen species (ROS) *contributes to inflammation
  • Decreases LDL ''The bad cholesterol''
  • Reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease
  • NO sugar diet has been shown to weaken cancer cells: *research is still being conducted looks promising.
  • Bragging rights (it takes discipline, not for the faint of heart)
*For my nerds out there, yeah that's you... and me.
It's important to note the radical metabolic changes these two distinct diets have.

On one hand, you have the western diet which runs on ''glucose'' and then the Ketogenic Diet which runs on ''Ketones'' -this radical shift in eating alters your ENTIRE metabolism.

Instead of using carbs and sugar (glucose) as your primary fuel source, you'll be now using FAT or technically speaking ketone bodies called acetoacetate; as you involuntarily initiate an internal process called ketogenesis...will discuss on our upcoming blog.
Until next time.
